Salt Lake County has paid $75,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a former Lehi police officer who hanged himself in a metro jail cell. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court by the wife, children and parents of Art Henderson, alleged that jail personnel ignored warnings that the ex-lawman was suicidal. The county did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. Judge Bruce Jenkins dismissed the lawsuit on Wednesday. Henderson allegedly fired shots in Lehi on Jan. 27, 2006, at his estranged wife and her boyfriend, then at responding officers. He was booked into the metro jail in South Salt Lake the next day on attempted murder charges and found hanged on April 19, 2006. Nate Bryan, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office, said a county insurance policy covered the settlement.

  1. Police Release 911 Tapes of Shootout

    Nishi Gupta reporting

911 tapes reveal the fear and confusion that took over a Lehi neighborhood during a shootout involving a former Lehi police officer.

Lehi police released recordings of the phone calls and dashcam video of a shootout with a former officer with the Lehi PD.

Friday morning, Henderson took his marital problems to the streets; firing at his ex-wife's boyfriend, then turning on his former colleagues.

911 Caller: "I have Art Henderson- he used to be an ex-cop, he's chasing me, and throwing things and he has a gun"

911 Caller: "I don't know if he has a gun right now with him, but he does definitely has one. He's shooting! He's shooting! He's shooting!" (woman screaming in background)

Dispatcher: "He's shooting? Okay, he's heading towards the pd on 1500 north. Art henderson- he's firing at these guys!...are you guys okay? Do you need an ambulance?"

Ten seconds later, the dispatcher asks the question again.

Dispatcher: "Are you guys injured? Are you there? Can you hear me?....hello? Can you hear me? I don't have anybody- I don't have anybody on the phone."

    The phone disconnects.

Another caller says what Craig Tremble couldn't.

Caller: "He shot out my back window, he shot a guy three times in a car, then rammed him into the mailbox, please!"

Minutes later, another frantic call from a woman named Betty Jo. She says the man who's been shot is in her house.

    Dispatcher: "Betty Jo?"

Caller: "Now just a minute, now what's your name?"

Craig tremble: "Craig Tremble, Craig Tremble. Tell her Craig Tremble got shot."

    Dispatcher: "Craig Tremble got shot?"

Caller: "He got shot in the foot, and where else?"

    Craig Tremble: "In the gut."

    Caller: "In the gut."

The dispatcher asks about Art Henderson, the suspected shooter.

Dispatcher: "Where is he? Can you see him?"

Caller: "Yes, he's sitting out their car with his car, he's pointing his gun at the police."

    Henderson then shoots.

The dashcam video shows an officer pulling up to help, but quickly retreating.

"AJ 22, get a perimeter, he's shooting at me, it's Art Henderson."

One by one, the dashcam video shows police move across the screen towards Henderson, rifles raised, as they attempt to gain control of a potentially deadly situation.

Another caller fills in what happened next.

Caller: "Oh, good god. Oh, good god. They shot him in the road!

Police say Lehi PD fired him about 16 months ago, after he was charged for assault in a prior case.

He was to appear in court on Monday for that, but he'll now be facing attempted murder.

Craig Tremble, the boyfriend, is in critical condition at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
