The man accused of firing at Miami-Dade police Wednesday night as he led officers on a car chase on the Palmetto Expressway is a former police officer in Broward and Palm Beach counties... Police say Saltare of Miramar attacked a woman he had dated for two years. The woman told police she noticed his black Dodge Charger following her. "At one point [Saltare] walked to the window of the car and began striking the window"... The woman drove off and he, driving next to her, "produced a firearm which he pointed several times at the victim, yelling at her to stop"... Miami-Dade police detectives found him with the pistol, one bullet in the chamber... Saltare was charged with assaulting the woman. It was not immediately clear whether he would be charged with shooting at Valls, a Miami-Dade officer since 2003... Saltare has been a law enforcement officer since August 1997 when he joined the Broward Sheriff's Office. In 1999, he had a short stint with Seminole police before leaving for Belle Glade. After Belle Glade, he returned to Seminole between March 2001 and July 2002 before again returning to Belle Glade. He was employed there until July 2006. Saltare did not remain an officer after the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office took over last year.
